Social, Entrepreneurial and
Developing forestry plantations contributes to the social, entrepreurial and economic development of the region. It creates new employment opportunities for locals, increases socioeconomic stability and contributes to the gradual reversing of migration patterns to larger urban environments.
Forest First is actively working with the local authorities in the areas of its plantations and is focussing its efforts on improving healthcare, education, skills development and entrepreneurial opportunities.
With respect to healthcare, Forest First provides ongoing support to the local health care facility in the form of basic medicines and equipment.
In the area of education, the school has benefited from the donation of books by Forest First as well as the construction of an ablution block, to which the community also contributed, a teacher for a year at the school in La Venturosa. In addition Forest First is working with teachers to provide rewards structured to motivate students to do better in their academic work.
Through the expansion of the forestry activities, opportunities have been developed in a number of different business areas that has allowed individuals within the community to initiate their own businesses. Forest First has assisted with seed capital and in the registration and administration formalities that are required.
In addition, Forest First has also established a soccer league, donated wood for housebuilding or restoration projects and hold recurring classes regarding fire safety which is a threat to the entire community during the fire season when the savannah is dry and fires set by farmers can easily get out of control.
